TRANSPORTATION IN STUTTGART -

How to move around inside the city of Stuttgart
Guide to use the public transportation in Stuttgart city.

When you visit the city for the first time there is always the question of how it is the best way to get around within it, how easy it is to find tourist places, how complicated it is when you do not speak German or if you are not used to visiting cities with subway or train systems and how expensive it could be to move from one place to another, that is why we will try to offer a basic and very general guide to how public transport works within the city, some tips depending on the type of visit what you will do, or even if you plan to move to Stuttgart. I would like to clarify that the prices shown may not be completely accurate, but rather an estimate quite close.

To start a small introduction: the city's internal public transport service is divided into S-bahn, U-bahn and buses. The S-bahn are the train lines that have longer distances and reach areas farther from the center, they are much longer trains and their frequency could be said to be relatively longer, but in general terms public transport is quite efficient . The U-bahn are the innermost lines, they move much more within the center and busiest arteries, there are a greater number of lines and they will probably be the lines you use most. Buses are to connect to a little more remote or specific places where the U-bahn fail to cover, used mostly for residents living in surrounding neighborhoods.

The transport map is divided into fare zone, these zones are a total of 10, but in most cases you will only need to move between zone 1, probably in zone 2 and perhaps even zone 3. the other zones really already They are small cities that usually tourists no longer need to access. But the important thing about the fare zones lies in the travel cost and that all the stations that are within an area have the same fare (2.5 Euros per individual trip), the additional cost for fare 2 is the same all stations within zone 2 and so on.

Therefore it could be said that the minimum you will have to pay to use the transport will be EU 2.5 Euros for each trip you make, one way and another EU 2.5 back in case you buy them individually within the same area. It really is a fairly high price recognizing that the city is relatively small and the distances are usually not too long. Later we will review some options to achieve more benefits for less cost with special tickets.

How to buy a ticket.
If you know in which area you will move it is easier, you only need to buy the ticket that covers an area, but in many cases if you are not sure the area you will have to specify which station you want to go to.
This is where the adventure of many begins! In each station you will find an automatic machine to buy the ticket, if you think you will have a window and someone to help you with advice in your language, or at least in English you are totally wrong! You will have to battle with the automatic machine which could be a bit intimidating, especially because of the difficulty of the language. It should be taken into account that the machine has the option to change to English or French, nothing more. Although the machine has the option to pay by credit card, my recommendation is to try to make available coins or bills since in some cases it is possible that the machine does not accept cards from abroad.

In any case, the automatic machine will have a list of all available train stations, and next to it a keyboard with the numbers, below another part of the keyboard with the type of tickets available. So you simply have to press the button of a person on the keyboard below, then the machine will ask for the station number which you will have to add on the number keypad at the top, and voila, it is automatically determined which zone is and the fare to be paid, you enter the coins or card failing that, and the ticket is printed. Simple! Remember, in this way you will only have bought the one-way ticket and not back.

Now there are different tickets that depending on your needs will help you save the cost of transport, it is understood that paying EU 2.5 every time you want to get on a train or bus could be quite excessive.
