THE RESISTANCE OF THE CLASSIC AGAINST THE MODERN.There is a much visited place in the city of Stuttgart by nationals and international visitors, very popular within the historical center of the city for that classic and elegant style in the middle of modern buildings and at the same time emblematic and historical as the old Castle, the collegiate church and Schiller square. And it is that when talking about shopping, tourism and history in the city of Stuttgart the Markthalle is without a doubt the first image that appears in the minds of its citizens.
Curiosity invited us to investigate a little about this peculiar place and we discovered that it really has its history that is worth knowing. A few meters from the marked, in front of the City Hall is located Marktplatz, or market place, this square was for many decades the only outdoor market in the city, in fact to this day the tradition of establishing temporary markets for local producers remains in the same square but about that we may speak on another occasion; It was until King William I, after suffering the death of a merchant who died frozen during a winter in the market, it was decided that he had to build a covered market, which would protect its users from the high temperatures of winter and rain . Initially, a fairly simple structure was built that little by little was needed extensions and modifications, it was when a contest was established where 77 local architects competed to make the design that is preserved until now, a young man of 36 years named Martin Ersasser won and was built 1911 to 1914, at the beginning in the market there were more than 300 fruit and vegetable stalls of local producers who grew in the surrounding hills of the city, they go down every day from the hills with their backpacks to open their stalls. That's why a train was requested to facilitate the transportation of products with greater efficiency, nowadays it still conserves the oldest train rails of the city within its facilities. During the Second World War the infrastructure suffered only damage to its roof, so re-establishing it was relatively quick and easy ..
As interesting architectural data we can highlight its lack of homogeneity in the design, and that the 4 facades have a different design from each other, on the one hand, the facades that look at the Royal buildings can appreciate a more elegant, detailed, more decorated with paintings and on the other side next to the Marktplatz a simpler design, finally in one of the corners to the west, a tower that represents the twin tower of the collegiate church next to the market, which symbolizes the church always is present looking everywhere. Inside you can also see the fountain of Ceres or Demeter, the goddess of fertility and agriculture, built in 1916 which in the beginning was supplied by a deposit of mineral water existing below the market. But it was until the 80's of the last century that a period of decline began. The emergence of supermarkets, transnational producers and shopping centers hit hard the profitability of their sellers. Its old and outdated infrastructure, with a lack of parking space, electrical harrows and modernity that the consumer demanded, made it difficult for new users to compete.
For what led to a fairly extensive discussion about the future of it, many were the options, from the demolition to build a parking lot, to make a nightclub within its facilities, but it was a request of 20 thousand citizens that caused the city the search for a solution to maintain the market as the heritage of the city. Finally and after this citizen initiative it was decided to maintain the market and fight for its conservation, nowadays the market totally changed the concept, it stopped being a popular market for local producers to be a market of international specialties, besides having a bazaar of different products for home, handicrafts, perfumery, haute couture, furniture and even floristry, currently houses 40 exclusive stores from different countries such as Spain, Greece, Turkey, among others, Asian products, African products and Latin America, restaurant and coffee shops. With the support of the city and its citizens, the market is now a mandatory stop for its international visitors as well as for national lovers of good taste and haute cuisine since this is also characterized by the availability of finding different products such as spices, cheeses, and meats that they could not find in a common supermarket. |
