THE NEW PALACE - NEUES SCHLOSS STUTTGART

History of Stuttgart city
There could not be a king without his palace

Very few cities in Germany have an imposing palace as representative in the center of the same city as is the New Palace in Stuttgart (NeuSchloss). And it is that its imposing infrastructure between gardens and squares next to the oldest part, are part of the daily life of citizens who traditionally enjoy sunny days around them as well as during winters when the city organizes traditional Christmas festivals . We collect information to learn a little more about its history and the historical context that finally led to its construction, in addition to the main characters that were part of this story.

It was the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, during this time there was always uncertainty within the city since both the location of the residence of the dukes and councilmen and the State offices were in discussion because the old palace no longer met expectations and needs of the time, there were different proposals, such as the transfer to Bad Cannstatt, but it was with the construction of the Ludwigsburg Palace that by decision of Duke Eberhard Ludwig he moved to the new and more modern palace in 1717, and finally in 1727 Stuttgart totally lost the character of residence and capital of the State of Wurttemberg.

For the city of Stuttgart this event was devastating, the economic losses were great, many artisans and officials who worked for the court moved, moving most of the economic activity to the city of Ludwigburg.

But it was Duke Carl Alexander, successor of Eberhard Ludwig, who in 1734 revoked the decision by returning the capital to Stuttgart again. Both the surrounding farms and the town hall celebrated the political decision by contributing and financially collaborating with the State. Duke Carls Alexander died unexpectedly in 1737 and his son Carl Eugen was declared in 1744 at the age of 16 the new Duke of Wurttemberg. This in gratitude promised and assured that the city of Stuttgart would remain the capital permanently, with the passage of time the costs and luxuries of life of the young ruler greatly upset the court, counts and officials who were forced to increase taxes to the residents, creating a resentment, indignation and nonconformity, especially when they finally charge property taxes, thus affecting the most influential classes.

The social political conflict was growing, but Carl Eugen was very clever and threatened again to move the capital to Ludwigsburg, collective fear played a great role in favor of Carl Eugen, who justified his actions and claiming disagreement, claiming justice towards favoring to the city, appealing better conditions and a more dignified environment for it, demanding even more benefits in the negotiations, including the construction of a more modern residence that met their needs and those of their administrative work, finally for fear of losing the benefits of being the capital of the State, the city acceded to its requests thus forcing greater contribution to its demands.

The Duke Carl Eugen never managed to enjoy the New Palace, the lack of funds as well as complications in the construction difficult the execution of the work that took 60 long years to be completely completed, for the water deposits in the ground the consulting of different architects forcing to change the design and construction techniques of its foundation, in addition to suffering a fire that prolonged the work over the years.
The Duke died before its inauguration in 1806. In fact, the motivation to accelerate and complete the construction was for political reasons, in response to the military aid offered by the State of Wurttemberg to the warlike causes of Napoleon, he offered the then Duke Frederick, make him the first King of Wurttemberg, so the completion of the palace was necessary for this important event to take place in the new facilities of a palace worthy of the new reign.

Finally, the 365-room palace was the official residence of the first three Kings of Wurttemberg. Only the last King who changed his residence for the Wilhelmpalais behind the New Palace, where the Stadtpalais is currently located.

In the Second World War the new palace was totally destroyed. There was a proposal by a Swiss investor to build a hotel with a public pool in the square, but the city council decided to rebuild it, although the design inside is very different, its exterior design tried to keep the same facades in style Renaissance of the original of 1806.

Currently the new palace houses the offices of the Ministry of Finance on the side of Planie Street and the karlsplatz square, and the Ministry of Culture in the part of the palace garden, in the middle the famous Marmol room was rebuilt with the original design where they are received high officials who visit the city, such as the Kings of Spain when they visited the city. But unfortunately it is not open to the public, and an official invitation is needed for your visit.
