Zoo y Botanic Park
Wilhema

Wilhelma was built in 1842 as a residence for King Wilhelm 1 of Wurttemberg in Moorish style. From the historic park, with the charm of 1001 nights, a botanical garden was developed, Later it became the zoo. With some 11,000 animals of 1200 species, and more than 7,000 plant myths, Wilhelma is one of the most species-rich places in the world.

An area approximately the size of 40 football fields, it houses more than 1000 species of animals from all continents. In addition, around 7,000 species of plants from all climatic zones of the Earth bloom in the greenhouses among impressive and beautiful gardens, also partly historical. The king of Wilhelm 1st had the oldest part of the complex with its buildings in the Moorish style, established as a private park in the mid-nineteenth century. The architect designed them inspired by the Alhambra of Granada in Spain, which led to the nickname of Wilhelma "the Alhambra in the neck". A beautiful pond with water lilies, imaginative fountains, historical urns and sculptures give the Moorish Garden its distinctive touch. The largest forest of magnolias north of the Alps is also located here. From the end of March onwards, around 70 trees transform the garden into a sea of white, pink and mauve flowers. The historical sections of the park, designed for a strict symmetrical design, are listed as a particularly valuable cultural monument.

Another visitor magnet is the new gorilla and bonobo house, which opened its doors in 2013 and also contains the nursery for simian babies. The Stuttgart Zoo has experience in the breeding of great apes and is the only one in Europe specialized in the accommodation of young gorillas abandoned by their mothers in other zoos. Through the windows of the enclosure, visitors can see the gorilla babies being fed, cared for, trained and cared for by their caregivers.
